One of my favorite little haunts…yuk yuk

Once in a while I’ve heard someone mention that La Carafe, a great little watering hole and Houston’s oldest bar, is haunted. I’ve never really paid that much attention to such talk, figuring that any building that old (pre-Civil War) is bound to get some rumors and stories attached to it. That is, however, until I stumbled upon this little video about it:

I’m not convinced the place is haunted, but I’m defiantly more interested in the subject now. I’d like to go to one of the séances that the guys in the vid hold at La Carafe, but the $20 price tag irks me a bit.

One interesting note, at around 4 minutes and 20 seconds into the video, the bartender discusses a ghost which pushes women down the stairs and the last time I was at La Carafe, a woman did fall down some stairs. Although, I wonder if it was a ghost pushing her or the combination of a couple of drinks, high heels, and a poorly lighted, narrow stairway…

Justin, it's Becca. I went to one of those "seances" at La Carafe and it was the biggest load of horse crap ever! Seriously, it was hard to keep a straight face, plus is was like $20 for 10 minutes. The guy that ran it works at Magic Island and none of his "tests" even pretended to work. Not to mention how awesome it was when he claimed they'd shut off the AC as a way to add authentification, but we could still hear and feel the breeze from the obviously functioning AC. They also made us sign an incredible waiver promising not to sue if we were "impaled" by flying objects.

I just can’t trust people who are stage magicians and host séances. If you’re trained in the arts of deception, trickery, and slight of hand, there’s no way that I’m going to be able to believe that something supernatural is occurring instead of you just faking it. Well, it’s good to know, they won’t be getting my 20 bucks anytime soon.
